Nancy Buell
Nancy Buell has been making jewelry in Kenai for several years. She is
a long-time Alaskan who has worked as an educator in Barrow, Anchorage
and Juneau. Jewelry is now her full-time occupation. She credits a life-long
fascination with the natural patterns in rocks with the awakening of her
creative interest in rock and gem jewelry. She works in several types
of stone, including semiprecious, and combines these with crystal, pearl
and silver accents.
Buell jewelry is currently in stores in Bend, Oregon, and here in Kenai
in the Arts in Alaska Gallery. She has previously displayed and sold in
the Jim Evanson gallery, the Tikhatnu gallery, and Kenai Kates.
She has Made in Alaska certification.
After 40 years of working with only part of my brain, I went to
a big gem and mineral show and combinations began to leap out at me. I
reached for certain stones, and I began to visualize in jewelry instead
of words. Jewelry making is both craft and art, and I have moved steadily
from modest attempts toward more artistic pieces as my craft skill has
developed and I am more and more able to translate vision into a completed
piece. Its very freeing and satisfying to be able to capture whats
in your minds eye in such a way.
My goal is to create one-of-a kind pieces which people can afford.
I seldom know what a piece will look like in advance. I lay materials
next to one another and wait for them to bond. If they dont leap
for one another, I take parts away and try something else. Its my
experience that when materials belong together, they reach
for and light up with one another.
